Established in 2001, the .NAME generic domain extension is the only one supposed to be for personal web pages only. These domain names can include personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other designations people are famous by. Initially, solely 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you desired to buy john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already bought third-level domain names remained operational.
